Southwest Charlotte · Mecklenburg County, NC
Steele Creek, Explained
A broad area of southwest Charlotte between the airport and Lake Wylie — not a town, not a single neighborhood, and not one set of rules.

What “Steele Creek” means
Steele Creek is a long-established name for a large part of southwest Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It takes its name from the creek and from the historic Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, whose congregation dates to the colonial era. It is not a separately incorporated town; there is no Steele Creek town government, tax rate or police department.
In everyday use, the name covers the area roughly bounded by Charlotte Douglas International Airport to the north and northwest, Lake Wylie and the South Carolina line to the southwest, and the South Tryon Street (NC 49) and I-77 corridors to the east. People draw that line differently, and ZIP codes such as 28273 and 28278 do not match community boundaries.
Why the exact address matters
Within this area you will find master-planned communities with private clubs, newer subdivisions with active construction, mixed-use apartments and townhomes, older homes on larger rural-feeling lots, distribution and office campuses, and lake shoreline. The same name covers all of it.
Most properties marketed as Steele Creek are inside Charlotte city limits, but not every one. Parcel records, not mailing addresses, determine municipal services and taxes.
- Municipal jurisdiction and county — verify per parcel.
- School assignment — set by address and subject to change.
- HOA and amenities — set by recorded documents for each subdivision or section.
- Lake access — never implied by proximity or a community name.
- Aircraft noise exposure — varies by location and flight operations.
Roads and getting around
Steele Creek is car-oriented. I-485 crosses the area and connects to I-77 on the east side; Steele Creek Road (NC 160), South Tryon Street / York Road (NC 49), Shopton Road, Westinghouse Boulevard and Arrowood Road carry much of the local traffic. Public transit is bus-based; check CATS for current routes before assuming service near a particular street.
The communities we cover
